Adivasi at a glance:
READ's target group includes the Adivasi referred to as ‘tribals’ people of India in the inaccessible, mountainous terrain where they have been living in small, often semi- nomadic hamlets for centuries without much government support. Many Adivasi are unorganized, illiterate and exploited by other interests people. READ’s operational area cover 60 villages and 21250 Adivasi and Dalit people. The tribal population of Odisha is approximately 8 million, or 22% of the total population. Sixty-two tribes have been scheduled in the state under Article 342 of the Constitution of India. These tribal communities mostly reside in the Scheduled Areas, which account for 44.21% of the total land of Odisha. The Adivasi have a distinct identity and culture, relationship with the environment, strong values of community, and a distinct knowledge system. Traditionally they live close to nature and are separated from the mainstream of society.

· To promote total development of the socially and economically backward people of the society irrespective of caste, creed, Gender, or age in rural areas.
· To open and run health care centers, Institutions and research centers for the development of public health.
· To open and cater free education both boys and girls and higher education in any part of the country in the area of computer technology, engineering management, arts, science, humanities polytechnics, software, computers hardware etc. to the meritorious students.
· To construct colleges, schools, kalyani mandap, communities’ hall, rural health centers and hospitals.
· To promote women upliftment in education and self reliance and to open and run institutions for rehabilitation of child labor, orphanages, refused women, divorce and rehabilitation facility for widows, family counseling centers, establishment of houses for disable persons.
· To seek grants, approval and or sanction from state government of India and federal Agencies in abroad and any other private organization in India and abroad for Agriculture, education, health, Technical, Technological and charitable purposes.
· To provide scholarship to meritorious and deserving students for higher studies and to arrange scholarship in India and foreign universities.
· To do whatever possible and legal for the development and welfare of women, children, destitute, elderly and the disabled by conducting free legal aid camps, seminars, and village adulates including establishment of research institutes on human rights and duties.
· To provide preventive, curative and rehabilitating services to women who are victims of atrocities, to provide distress women with services like crisis intervention, investigation in dowry death cases, counseling in case of martial family mal adjustment, reconciliation in case of separation out of court-settlement in marital cases or referral services like short stay home, legal aid police assistance etc.
· To impart education on agriculture research and to facilitate maximum production from land, marketing of agricultural produce, organize consolidation of holding, proper arrangement of irrigation, provide for good seeds, manure fertilizer through cooperative societies and to obtain loan from agriculture banks, NABAD and village and khadi Industries.
· To organize cooperative marketing of agriculture and small scale industrial products, including training for agro food processing, fisheries etc. through Orissa university of Agriculture and Technology and other training Institutes in India.
· Plantation and preservation of herbal plants along with sufficient growth of forest produce including ecological development and protection of natural or artificial forest.
· To eradicate unemployment problem in rural areas by imparting free driving training courses other technical trainings to the unemployed.
· To publish or help in publishing books, Pamphlets, periodicals and newspapers or other media of mass communication in India or outside for the spread and advancement of education rural development, Research on Human Rights and Duties, culture and science etc.
Situation:
Large part of the reference area is under Forest cover and hence majority of the community depends on forests for livelihood. The area has been notified underdeveloped, where no development work is implemented by the Government. Most villages face the threat of eviction while some have already been evicted. Being devoid of basic service infrastructure and denied access to livelihood sources, MMR, IMR & CMR incidences and malnutrition percentages are high in the area. Migration is consequently inevitable. Children are drawn into the workforce at a very young age.
In the geographical location selected, there are no Government medical facilities, no high schools, no private schools, inadequate primary health sub-centers, Roads, water supply, drainage and communication network are inadequate to augment of the people. Many women, men, young boys and girls migrate to different cities for work. In a year three to four months they get work in their own villages or near by villages’ rest of the months some people remain ideal and some go to different states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Moharastra, Karnataka, and Delhi for work. They are forced to do unsociable activities. These innocent women, men, girls and boys become the victims of HIV/AIDS.
The aim of READ is to empower the tribal and Dalit to ensure their right to life, livelihood and self-development. The programs have evolved off the database analysis and needs of the community. Awareness building, mobilization and collective action are the keystones of READ approach.
The activities carried out:
1. Health Awareness camp at village level.
2. Organized health camps such as Immunization to children, ANC camp, General Health camp, Eye camp, Traditional birth attendance training (TBA). These programs conducted with the support of Local Govt.
3. Formation of SHG in 25 villages. Tie up with microfinance intuitions to get financial support for creating small business of the rural tribal and dalit women for the economical sustainability.
4. Awareness camps at village level on children education.
5. Awareness camps on Water and Sanitation at village level. Tie up with local Govt. for the support.

With the support of “Manos Unidas”, Spain READ is implementing the following programs in the project area such as:
Health awareness camp:
Health awareness camps were organized in each month at center level. Young boys and girls and men and women attended the camp. Health specialist from medical college and near by hospital called Bamunigam were invited for the camps. They shared their knowledge on health and discussed with people about various diseases, signs and symptoms of diseases, health related issues / causes, preventive and curative measures, hygienic practices, cleanliness, sanitation, mother and child care etc. This camp organized regularly.
Traditional Birth Attendance (TBA):
30 numbers of TBAs are attended trainings. TBA training was organized quarterly basis for two days duration at center level. Doctor / nurse were invited to give training to the rural women. During the training the following topics were discussed and taught to the TBAs such as : Pre & Post natal Care of Pregnant mother, Care of New born baby, Preparation for the delivery, Five Cleanliness (Hands, Thread, Blade, Cloth & place) etc. this 30 numbers of TBAs are working voluntarily in the organization.
Antenatal Care (ANC) Camp:
ANC camps were organized regularly for 9 months at center level for the pregnant women with the support of Doctors / ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) Anganwadi Workers. During the camp pregnant mothers were provided Tetanus toxide injection, iron with folic acid tablets and vitamins from government resource. Together170 pregnant mothers have attended the camps and received benefits. All the mothers are provided DDK kit for healthy and proper use.
Immunization camp:
Immunization camps are organized in collaboration with Government ANM and Doctors regularly. During the camps mothers from program villages brought their children to the center for Immunization. During these camps children received different immunization doses. During this year 879 number of under 5 children received different immunization doses.
Supply of medicine:
Rural health center is very near to the people. The people of different villages are coming to the health center for their health checkups and getting primary health support. Doctors from Bamunigam PHC come and give treatment. In other days the village nurse look after the health center. The people are provided medicines, Blood checkup at Rural Health Center. Each person have been the member of health center, they have been provided health card at the rate of Rs.10/- which indicates that they are the members of the health center. These members are provided medicines with the 50% discount.
