Moreover, sustainability considered a major indicator of progress. From its inception READ has been involved in the backward area of the districts predominantly inhabited by Tribal and Dalit who are always in threat, dominated, tortured, exploited and under privileged. These people are living in rural area, more particularly the remote hilly region. The people are more vulnerable and under developed.
In the past 10 years, we have been working with the tribal and Dalit communities of these remote pockets who struggle hard for their survival and overall development. Our main activities are in the field of education for children, community health, women empowerment and livelihood. At present with the support of Manos Unidas spain, READ is working in 50 dalit and tribal villages, implementing integrated community health program. We are a team of highly motivated and well-experienced development workers aiming at measurable results and impact in the communities we are working with. As a local NGO working in the midst of the disadvantaged communities in this area for many years, we have been able to organize the communities and form Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in the villages. As an NGO accepted by the target communities, READ has also created network partnerships with other organizations to carry out different activities for development of the tribal people and the dalits. READ has built network with local Government getting support and cooperation for the development work of this people.
Situation: Large part of the reference area is under Forest cover and hence majority of the community depends on forests for livelihood. The area has been notified underdeveloped, where no development work is implemented by the Government. Most villages face the threat of eviction while some have already been evicted. Being devoid of basic service infrastructure and denied access to livelihood sources, MMR, IMR & CMR incidences and malnutrition percentages are high in the area. Migration is consequently inevitable. Children are drawn into the workforce at a very young age.
In the geographical location selected, there are no Government medical facilities, no high schools, no private schools, inadequate primary health sub-centers, Roads, water supply, drainage and communication network are inadequate to augment of the people. Many women, men, young boys and girls migrate to different cities for work. In a year three to four months they get work in their own villages or near by villages’ rest of the months some people remain ideal and some go to different states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Moharastra, Karnataka, and Delhi for work. They are forced to do unsociable activities. These innocent women, men, girls and boys become the victims of HIV/AIDS.
The aim of READ is to empower the tribal and Dalit to ensure their right to life, livelihood and self-development. The programs have evolved off the database analysis and needs of the community. Awareness building, mobilization and collective action are the keystones of READ approach.
The activities carried out:
1. Health Awareness camp at village level.
